HHS Seniors Bridge the Gap Between Student Inquiry and Professional Expertise at AP Research Coffee Hour
Senior students in the Scholars Center for the Humanities Magnet Program at Howell High School took a significant step forward in their academic journeys by hosting an AP Research Coffee Hour. The event connected student researchers with district staff members who hold doctoral degrees to discuss the rigors of high-level academic study.
The Humanities students are currently in the process of designing and implementing year-long, in-depth studies on topics of their own choosing. As part of the AP Research curriculum, these students must develop a well-reasoned argument based on original evidence and eventually defend their findings before a panel.
During the Coffee Hour, the dynamic shifted as students interviewed staff about their own journeys. Students asked about original thesis topics, any hurdles they may have encountered, and the specific strategies used to overcome academic challenges. This exchange allowed students to see the real-world application of the inquiry methods they are currently practicing.
The event serves as a milestone for the students as they move toward the final phase of their projects: a formal presentation and oral defense of their work.
